Jax Fish House - Boulder
Jax Fish House, 928 Pearl St., Boulder, CO (303) 444-1811
Some people are firm believers that when dining in a land locked restaurant – one should never order seafood. Those people have never been to Jax Fish House!
The big red f restaurant group own Jax & several other restaurants I regularly enjoy dining in. They manage to source the freshest foods, they find seasonal specialties and finally, they provide creative, delicious food, serve it in an ambiance that is comfortable and staff their restaurants with affable yet professional individuals.
January 4th, my sister in law offered sitting services to allow my husband and me a date night. Paul & I really wanted seafood, and decided on Jax, the Zagat Survey “top seafood restaurant in the rocky Mountain Region.”
This was our third visit to Jax within the last two months and as previously encountered, our service was excellent. The winter menu chef Hosea Rosenberg offered was fantastic, Kristen, our server, was delightful and the house manager greeted us and other guests at their tables making all feel welcome.
For appetizers, Paul had the iceberg wedge ($5.00), literally a wedge of iceberg lettuce served with tomatoes and a five onion ranch dressing. I opted for the baby beet salad ($9.00), a delicious combination of mesclun greens, multi colored baby beets, a wedge of haystack mountain ash chevre topped with pistachio vinaigrette. The baby beet salad was outstanding and has become a dish I’ve been craving ever since that January 4th evening…. Gotta get back there soon!
For dinner Paul enjoyed the New Zealand bluenose ($19.00), a rocky coastal white fish. This tasty fish was prepared with the most perfect tempura crust, served on a bed of coconut rice & perfumed with green curry. Outstanding! I enjoyed the ruby red trout ($17.00), a flavorful cold water lake fish. This excellent fish was served with sweet corn polenta, braised red cabbage & a lemon-caper beurre blanc sauce. Exceptional!
My appetizer and fish were paired with a 2002 Marc Bredif Vouvray chenin blanc from the Loire Valley of France. A versatile table wine that tastes of apples, cantaloupe and a touch of citrus.
Jax, we’ll be back again soon – I love the old school tuna on Monday nights, but may have to sample more of chef’s winter menu! Thanks for a great time!
